No surgery

Our consultation with the surgeon for tomorrow has been cancelled. Because the cancer has spread, surgery is no longer an option at this point.

We do have local appointments with an oncologist, Dr. B., and a radiation oncologist, Dr. L., on Monday. I'm assuming we will know more about chemotherapy and radiation after those appointments.

We are also attempting to get a referral to the UCDavis Cancer Clinic, but have discovered that jumping through insurance hoops might make that difficult.

  3. Thinking of you.

When my husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer there was a lot of discussion of the order of surgery, chemo and radiation. If I am remembering correctly, we did in-hospital chemo first. The idea being to stop the tumor from continuing to grow and potentially shrink it prior to surgery. I think that was followed by radiation and then surgery.

Still lots of options. You should research as much as you can handle. Again, it is important to trust the doctors on your team. And to feel like they are hopeful.

Our main doctor never gave up on us. One of his co-workers was doing rounds at the hospital once and you could tell he never thought my husband would come out of the hospital. We showed him. We saw him about a month later at the oncology office and let him know that dh had just finished 1/2 a ham sandwich. He was amazed--happily so but clearly stunned.

  4. Hey Sandy - I was talking to Jeff about what is going on. His dad had esophageal cancer and received treatment in Salt Lake City. His stepmother really liked the guy and he asked me to pass on this information: He is Dr. Pramod Sharma and can be reached in his Salt Lake City office at (801) 328-2522.

You are both in our thoughts and prayers. I believe in miracles.
